What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a grappling-based martial art focused on leverage, technique, and control. It teaches you how to defend yourself and submit an opponent using joint locks and chokes, making it effective for all body types.

Do I need to be fit or experienced to start?

No. BJJ is beginner-friendly and classes are structured to help you build fitness, confidence, and skills over time. Many people start with little or no athletic background.

Is BJJ safe?

BJJ is one of the safest martial arts when trained correctly. Instructors emphasize control, tapping early, and mutual respect. Injuries are uncommon and usually minor.

What does a typical class look like?

A beginner class usually includes:

  • Warm-up and movement drills

  • Technique instruction

  • Partner drilling

  • Optional light sparring (“rolling”)

  • Cool-down and questions

Am I too old to start?

No. People start BJJ at all ages. Training intensity can always be adjusted to suit your goals and physical ability.
